How Not to Clean Chips

Casino chips are mostly made from composite clay and in the earlier days they used to be manufactured with pure clay. Chips made from pure clay are quite delicate and can be easily broken. Also, pure clay chips are more prone to accumulate dust and grime in comparison to the other types of chips. Cleaning chips regularly is very important, especially if they are very valuable.

What several collectors fail to understand is that chips are so delicate that they can be easily damaged if they are not handled with care and if they are not cleaned properly. There are several do's and don'ts when it comes to cleaning chips.

Things not to do when clean chips

Given below is a list of things which should not be done while cleaning chips:

  • The hot stamp on the chips is very delicate so do not clean it with toothbrush even if it has very soft bristles. Only rub the hot stamp with your fingers gently.
  • Do not use any abrasive material for cleaning the chips
  • Do not steam clean the chips. The steam will soften up the chips and damage it.
  • Do not use any type of harsh detergent or bleach for cleaning the chips.
  • Do not put them directly in the washing machine for cleaning them since it will absolutely ruin them. Several people even try to put the chips in a pillow case or even in a T-shirt before putting them in a washing machine. This should also be avoided since the chips are very delicate.
  • The inlay of the chips is very delicate so do not clean it with a toothbrush. Just like the hot stamp only rub it with your finger for cleaning it.
  • When oiling the chips do not put oil on the inlay or even on the hot stamp of the chips. Oiling them can damage the inlay or the hot stamp especially if the chips are very old.
  • If the chips are already considerably damaged and if the plastic covering of the inlay has come off, then avoid using water or toothbrush for cleaning it. Instead just take a soft dry cloth to remove the dust and the grime from the surface of the inlay. If the water comes in contact with the inlay it can damage the print or the design.
  • Do not dip the chips in oil or do not immerse them in a pot of oil for oiling them. One drop of oil is sufficient for oiling two or three chips so any more oil than that should not be used. Using excess oil or leaving them overnight in a pot of oil will only ruin the chips.

These were some of the things that should be avoided while cleaning or while oiling the chips. Chips can be very delicate and the inlay and the hot stamp on the chips are especially very prone to damage. To avoid any major damage to the chips, it is important to clean them in the right way.
