Oil Chips For Cleaning

Maintaining chips is not very difficult and it only takes a little time, especially if the collection is quite small. Apart from cleaning them regularly to remove their dust and grime, it is also important to oil chips regularly in order to maintain their luster and color. There are several benefits of oiling chips and especially if the chips are valuable and rare, it is worth all the effort.

Benefits of oiling chips

For clay chips, especially those which are softer oiling is quite helpful since it helps bring out the original color of the chip and it also prevents them from getting dirty fast. Oiling the chips will also prevent color rub off of the chips up to some extent and it will help maintain its luster and shine.

How to oil chips

In order to oil chips it is recommended to use mineral oil. Also, it is necessary to ensure that the chips have been cleaned before they are oiled. If they have just been washed then let them dry for some time and do not oil them while they are still wet. Some people also prefer to oil brand new chips but it is not actually required. New chips often have a chalky dust which can turn into a paste if they are oiled without cleaning them first.

Only a very little oil will be needed for oiling the chips. Use only around a teaspoon for a set of 500 chips. Do not use too much oil since it will only make it quite messy and will end up spoiling the chips rather than helping maintain them. Take a small drop of oil on a finger and then just gently rub the oil on the surface of the chip.

Make sure to cover all the areas including the ridges, edges and back of the chips. One or two drops will last for oiling two or three chips so it is not required to take more oil for every chip. Do not oil the inlay since it is very delicate and does not actually require any oiling. Oil every chip and place them all on a paper towel. The paper towel will soak up all the excess oil.

Do not rub them with the paper towel for drying them, they will automatically dry on their own. It is recommended that you let the chips remain on the paper towel for at least a few hours or even for an entire night. Place them at a place where they would not come in contact with too must dust or would not be touched by anyone else. If the oil has not been properly dried a dusty place will only make them dirtier without providing any good results.

In the morning gently rub the chips to remove any excess oil if it hasn't dried. The colors of the chips would be more vibrant by this time and the chips would be shining and would be as good as new. Place them back in a proper storage case which is preferably air tight in order to protect them from any dust or grime.

It is recommended that the chips should be oiled every time they are cleaned.
